Last week, French president Emmanuel Macron, followed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, raised the idea, that seemed to be marginal until recently, about creating a joint EU army.

However, it is unclear how the “EU Army” will coexist with NATO, whether it will divide the EU countries and, at the same time, worsen the future prospects of defence of Ukraine.

So, why Macron raised the issue of the EU army? His statement showed a trend that began to manifest itself with Trump coming to power in the White House: Europe tries to drift away from the United States.
