Ukraine is going to terminate the railway connection with Russia. This was stated on August 6 by the Minister of infrastructure of Ukraine Volodymyr Omelyan.

“But is it really possible to completely discontinue the railway communication with Russia?” The head of the program “Infrastructure of the future” of the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, First Deputy Minister of infrastructure of Ukraine (2014-2016) is pondering.

The termination of railway communication with Russia can be interpreted as a lack of strategy. After all, this will only lead to the redistribution of passenger and freight traffic between other means of transport – primarily the road transportation.

The promptness of this issue is determined by two parameters — economic viability and political connotations. Most likely, it is connected with the upcoming elections.

Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian railway lines) will sustain economical losses from termination of the passenger traffic and freight movement with Russia.
