The accession of the self-proclaimed republics into Russia is the most desirable option for local people. However, locals understand that Russia does not need Donbass.

These results were announced by experts of the Ukrainian Institute for the Future during the presentation of the focus groups “Thoughts and sentiments of residents of the occupied territories” today, on November 14, in the news agency “Ukrinform”.

Meanwhile, “DPR” and “LPR” gaining the status of federations within Ukraine under the terms of the Minsk Agreements is also an acceptable scenario for some respondents. Another question is whether Ukraine needs these territories now? UIF experts conclude: the returning of Donbass means not only dealing with the destroyed infrastructure and “brainwashed” locals but also receiving the territory on the verge of ecological disaster and economic problems.

Also, some of the interviewed residents liked the option of the “DPR” and the “LPR” declaring independence and creating a new state – Novorussia.
