PLANS FOR A NEW MILITARY ALLIANCE AND SEEKING INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT – HUNGARY

A milestone event of this week was the first (in the last 8 years) visit of the US Secretary of State to Hungary on February 11. The rapprochement with the United States took place with the coming of Donald Trump to power: both states share the opinions on a number of international political issues.

The main event of this week is the signing by Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia and Slovenia of a letter of intent to create a Regional Special Operations Component Command that will also contribute to NATO’s collective security.

However, Hungary is again suffering from criticism by Brussels. This time the “seven-point” family protection action plan announced by Viktor Orban on 11 February was criticized. The Minister of Social Affairs of Sweden, Annika Strandell wrote on Twitter that the Hungarian policy reminds similar policy that existed in Germany in 30s. This, in turn, caused discontent of the Hungarian authorities and countries that share the same position on demographic policy – Italy and Bulgaria took the side of Hungary. At the same time, the Hungarian people also support the state policy for the protection of families: 63% of 541 respondents expressed satisfaction with the planned activities.
